Three children died in a fire in the Gituamba area of Gitaru in Kabete on Wednesday, February 19.

According to reports from Inooro, the three perished after eight houses caught fire.

The children were aged six, four, and three months. Investigations into the cause are ongoing, according to OCPD Antony Mbogo.

Elsewhere, barely a month after the fire ravaged Isiolo’s grasslands, another wildfire has broken out, this time in Garissa County.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the fire broke out in Modogashe, Eresaburu, and Gurufu along the Isiolo-Garissa border on Wednesday, February 19.

Although the relief agency did not indicate what time the inferno erupted, some unverified reports indicate the fire broke out at around midday Wednesday.

Images seen by Kenyans.co.ke from last night showed the blaze still raging. “Response teams are at the scene, working alongside community members to contain the fire,” Red Cross said. Some reports indicate the inferno broke out from the Sabena grazing zone and spread to other grazing areas.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. However, with the region receiving dry weather since the start of the year, pastures in the region are dry, making the spread of the fire quick and challenging to contain.

Authorities have asked residents to stay alert and follow safety protocols as the fire continues to spread.

Last month, a wildfire erupted in Isiolo, raging for more than two days. The fire is said to have affected several villages and damaged grazing areas.

The inferno consumed acres of grazing fields, leaving herders lost for a way forward on how they would feed their livestock.

While the inferno started in Merti, it later spread to Iresaboru, Badana, and Sericho villages. Parts of Matarba, Korbesa, and Malkagalla were also affected.

The fire that ravaged Isiolo's grasslands was reportedly caused by human error, the county commissioner revealed. As of Wednesday, 22 January, more than 300,000 acres of grazing land had been affected by the bushfires.
