JKIA Passengers Cautioned of 8-Hour Blackout Day After Fire Outbreak

Sections of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) will experience a blackout on Sunday between 9 am to 5 pm, just hours after a fire broke out at the airport.

According to a statement by Kenya Power dated February 22, power will be switched off in the mentioned areas for maintenance.

"Please receive planned power maintenance for tomorrow," the statement read.

The first area named in the notice is the Barabara Plaza Road inside the JKIA airport. This will affect KeNHA Barabara Plaza, HCD, KCAA, and adjacent customers.

Inside the airport, several establishments including Mitchell Cotts Group, Swissport Kenya Airflo, Crowne Plaza, Vegro, and DB Shenker will be affected by the blackout.

Air Connection, Kunhe+Nagel, Four Point Hotel, Airport Trade Centre, Global Freights Logistics, KAA, Siginon Aviation, Acceller, Freight Complex and adjacent customers will also be affected.

The blackout announcement comes just a day after JKIA a wildfire broke out inside the international airport ravaging through grasslands that border the main runway on Friday night.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident stating that the fire had consumed the area towards 75 Airport North Road. 

Although concerning, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) ultimately confirmed that no critical infrastructure had been affected in the blaze.

Crucial airport activities including the takeoff and landing of aircraft were also not affected according to KAA and the airport continued functioning without any delays.

"All airport activities including flight schedules, passenger processing, cargo handling remain fully operational and unaffected," the statement read.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established although the fire was contained after hours of fighting it.
