Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations into an incident in which a police officer fatally shot his colleague in Nairobi.

The incident, which took place in the wee hours of Sunday, February 23, saw one officer open fire at his colleague, killing him instantly, in Ruaraka.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the two officers were leaving an entertainment joint when an altercation ensued.

The deceased officer, who is attached to the General Service Unit, was in the company of his brother when an argument with his colleague ensued.

The argument morphed into a physical confrontation with the constable withdrawing his firearm and shooting his colleague dead.

In a panic, the shooter attempted to run away during the 1:00 am incident but was quelled by members of the public who were baying for his blood.

The deceased's body was taken to the Kenyatta University mortuary while the rogue officer was also rushed to a nearby medical facility after sustaining minor injuries from the incident.

Cases of officers turning on their colleagues are not uncommon, but there has been a rise in such incidents in recent months. Experts claim this can largely be attributed to mental health struggles among members of security agencies.

In June last year, Kenyans were up in arms after a plainclothes police officer was caught on video shooting at the public at close range at the height of anti-Finance Bill protests.

Around the same time, another incident saw a chief inspector open fire at Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti in an open show of discontent over a case that went against his spouse.

The officer, who was in charge of a police station in Londiani in Western Kenya, pulled out his gun after the judge decided to cancel his partner's bail after she had absconded.

In the Mbooni area in Makueni County, a police officer attached to Kikima Police Station surrendered to his boss after fatally shooting his colleague.
