A police officer in the Mbooni area in Makueni County has surrendered himself to his boss after shooting and killing his colleague.

The incident, which occurred in the wee hours on Saturday morning, left the other officers in shock as the two colleagues had no prior quarrels.

The officers attached to the Kikima Police Station were returning their firearms after an overnight shift when the victim was shot and bled to death.

According to the Mbooni Officer in Charge of a Police District (OCPD) Charles Rono, the root cause of the shooting is yet to be established.

“No one knows what happened because the two were reporting off duty, in the cause of returning the firearms to the store,” Rono stated.

According to the OCPD, there were no signs of struggle in the firearm store or bodily harm on the victim's body, which made the incident more bizarre.

“Both of them were using G3 rifles, but there was no exchange,” he added.

The body of the deceased was later transferred to the Mbooni West Referral Hospital awaiting post-mortem.

Investigations have been launched to ascertain the events leading to the incident, as the other police officer, yet to record a statement, was detained to help with the probe.

In a similar incident, a 40-year-old man handed himself over to the police in Bungoma on Saturday morning, after hacking his wife to death.

The wife, who was a police officer at the Kiwanja Police Post in Kasarani, Nairobi, was off duty, attending a burial ceremony in Bungoma.

According to the police report, the two were involved in a marital scuffle, which later escalated leading to the fateful incident.

A bloody panga, suspected to be the murder weapon was recovered from the suspect's home.
