Following his diagnosis of a brain tumor, he was taken to Germany where he underwent surgery to remove it.

The family spokesperson detailed that in April 2024, it was discovered that the tumor had recurred and he went back to Germany for a second removal.

Chebukati was taken back to the hospital later in December 2024 after returning from Germany after doctors confirmed that the tumor had recurred.

After he was discharged, he was re-admitted to the hospital on February 12. He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he suffered a cardiac arrest a week later on February 20, 2025.

However, the family dispelled rumors that were doing rounds on social media suggesting that he was 'clinically dead.'

''At no time was the immediate family called upon and informed he was clinically dead,'' Nyongesa pointed dispelling the reports.

The family will now conduct a post-mortem examination on his body awaiting his burial slated for March 8, 2025, at his Kitale home.

Before his demise, Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson for six years until 2023, when he retired. During his tenure, he presided over the 2017 and 2022 elections.

Born on December 22, 1961, Chebukati attended Lenana High School in Nairobi County before joining the University of Nairobi (UoN) to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Law.
