Tragedy struck when a pick-up truck transporting 24 church members overturned, resulting in one fatality and leaving 15 others injured.
The group was on their way to Suba Sub-County Hospital in Sindo to collect the body of a fellow church member in preparation for burial when the tragic accident occurred.
The accident, which is believed to have happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning, occurred in Malongo Village, Suba South Constituency, Homa Bay County.
Those who were critically injured were rushed to local hospitals as emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance.
While the cause of the accident remains unclear, preliminary reports indicate that overloading and poor road conditions may have contributed to the crash.
Further reports suggest that the pick-up truck, typically used for transporting goods, was being used to carry passengers, in violation of road safety regulations.
Church members who sustained minor injuries were treated at nearby health facilities and later discharged.
Following the incident, authorities have launched an investigation and urged residents to refrain from using non-passenger vehicles for transport.
Additionally, measures are being taken to provide support to the affected families.
The latest development comes after a deadly night-time accident in the Ogona area on the Londiani-Muhoroni road resulted in four deaths and left 56 others injured.
The accident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, February 24, when a passenger bus from Climax Sacco, travelling to Nairobi, collided with a truck heading towards Muhoroni.
According to police reports, the bus lost control and swerved off the road, before landing in a sugarcane plantation.
"The bus veered off the road on the left side as one faces the Londiani direction, into a sugarcane farm," the police report revealed.
