Two people have been confirmed dead, while 10 others are receiving treatment after sustaining critical injuries in an alleged banditry attack.
According to reports, a group of bandits from Samburu North attacked a bus ferrying passengers from Maralal to Baragoi on Thursday, February 27.
Further reports indicated that the two people killed in the incident, which occurred around 6 pm, were bus conductors who died on the spot.
The injured received first aid before being rushed to Samburu County Referral Hospital, where they are currently recuperating.
Addressing the press moments after the incident, a victim revealed that the assailants began shooting at the bus from a distance, forcing the driver to stop. They then entered the bus and started threatening passengers.
“They let the first bus pass before attacking us. We have been threatened for the longest time. I recorded the clips using my phone,” claimed a victim.
Commenting on the matter, local leaders from Samburu accused the government of failing to curb the rising insecurity in the region.
This is not the first time such an incident has been reported in the North Eastern region. In a similar attack in September last year, a group of armed assailants reportedly targeted a Nairobi-bound bus.
Terrorists believed to be from the Shifta faction reportedly attacked a 60-seater bus along the Moyale-Isiolo stretch and began spraying bullets, killing one passenger on the spot.
The attack left six passengers critically injured, but they were rushed to the Sololo Mission hospital. However, another passenger succumbed while being rushed to the health facility.
In yet another similar occurrence in June last year, a group of Al-Shabaab militants attacked a bus full of passengers along the Wajir-Mandera highway, injuring several passengers.
During the incident, the terrorists ordered the passengers to alight from the bus and began threatening them. However, none of the 55 passengers were killed.
