A tragic shooting incident involving officers from Gigiri Police Station unfolded on the evening of Sunday, March 9, after a police officer allegedly opened fire on his colleagues, killing one and injuring another in the process.

Preliminary police reports indicated that the suspect, who was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, fired multiple shots inside the police station's canteen.

The officer is believed to be part of the security team attached to Parliament. Reports claim an altercation ensued within the canteen with the drunk officer reaching for his firearm and effectively shooting at his colleagues. It took the intervention of other police officers to subdue their rogue colleague before the situation escalated further.

The fatal shooting claimed the life of an officer attached to the Runda Police Station, who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, efforts to save the officer proved futile and he was pronounced dead on arrival. Meanwhile, another officer attached to the Judiciary suffered a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen and was also rushed to hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition.

Officers responding to the scene managed to disarm their rogue colleague and recovered a Jericho pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

The pistol will undergo ballistic analysis as part of ongoing investigations to determine exactly what led to the fatal shooting inside the recreational facility.

Amid an inquiry into the incident, questions are now being raised about how an allegedly intoxicated officer was able to discharge his firearm inside a police facility.

The rogue officer, meanwhile, could see a myriad of charges slapped on him including murder, attempted murder, and illegal use of a firearm.

Incidentally, there was a similar incident in February 2025 when a police officer fatally shot his colleague in Ruaraka.

In an event eerily similar to the Gigiri shooting, the two officers were leaving an entertainment joint when an altercation ensued. The argument morphed into a physical confrontation with the constable withdrawing his firearm and shooting his colleague dead.

In a panic, the shooter attempted to run away during the 1:00 am incident but was quelled by members of the public who were baying for his blood.
