A former Member of the County Assembly (MCA) has been arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for masquerading as one of their officers.

The EACC, in a statement, revealed they had nabbed the former Kyululu Ward MCA alongside two other suspects.

In their statement, the anti-graft agency revealed the trio was arrested at an entertainment venue in Komarock as they waited to pounce on a victim.

Further investigations by EACC detectives uncovered the extent of the criminal organisation involving the three suspects, who were found in possession of mobile phones and 22 SIM cards, which were confiscated by authorities.

Detectives also recovered eight notebooks containing the names and details of their intended victims.

The EACC said on Tuesday, "The arrest follows numerous complaints alleging that the three suspects were impersonating EACC’s investigators and extorting money from senior Government officials and parastatal heads."

Following the latest arrest of impersonators, the commission warned the public against falling victim to fraudsters who exploit the public's fear of the EACC to extort money.

Members of the public have been urged to check for official job cards whenever confronted by individuals claiming to be attached to the EACC.

The commission also clarified that persons of interest are typically summoned via written communication to appear at the headquarters, the nearest regional office, or a police station.

Notably, cases of imposters claiming to be attached to government institutions have been prevalent in recent months, with the EACC stepping up efforts to curb the vice. One of the more sensational cases saw the commission's detectives arrest an individual who masqueraded as the EACC's Assistant Director of Intelligence Operations.

Unfortunately, the October 2024 arrest came after the imposter had conned several Kenyans out of millions, including state officials whom he had promised to resolve their graft cases.

That same month, two individuals posing as officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) were arrested after pretending to inspect goods in shops within the Bamburi area before ultimately extorting money from the businessmen.
