The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned the ongoing inter-communal conflicts in Samburu County, which have led to the loss of five lives and the theft of 800 livestock.
On March 11, North Deputy County Commissioner Samwel Mwangi confirmed that at least five people had died following a deadly cattle rustling incident in Baragoi, Samburu North.
He added that police had managed to recover some of the stolen livestock as they continued to pursue the bandits and retrieve the remaining animals.
Following this incident, NCIC Chair Samuel Kobia released a statement on Wednesday, March 12, raising concerns over the tensions in Kilepoi Kawap, Baragoi area, stating that such violence is barbaric and inhumane.
“We unequivocally condemn these violent acts and urge all parties involved to stop the hostilities immediately. Violence and conflict have no place in communities, and the continued strife only serves to deepen division and suffering in the communities in the country,” part of the statement reads.
NCIC has launched an investigation in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to determine the root causes of the conflict.
The commission assured that it is also working with local leaders and security officers to calm the situation and encourage dialogue between the affected groups.
“We urge political and community leaders to take an active role in fostering dialogue and promoting peaceful coexistence.”
“It is imperative to abandon harmful cultural practices like cattle rustling and theft and instead explore sustainable, alternative means of livelihood,” the commission added.
NCIC further urged political and community leaders to take an active role in discouraging harmful practices such as cattle rustling.
Kobia added that the commission is working to make sure that justice is served to protect the rights and safety of all communities as provided in the constitution of Kenya 2010.
He further appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from retaliation, urging the people of Baragoi to support the ongoing peace initiatives.
