Super Metro, on Wednesday, March 12, released a statement in the wake of a recent incident involving one of its buses where a tout allegedly threw a man out of a moving bus over an unpaid fare.
In its statement, Super Metro revealed that it had suspended the crew involved in the incident as investigations commenced.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving one of the buses operating under our company’s name. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” stated Super Metro.
“While the matter is under investigation, we want to assure everyone that we take safety very seriously. We do not condone reckless behaviour, and as a precautionary measure, the crew involved in this incident has been suspended pending further investigation,” the company added.
According to unconfirmed reports, the incident happened a few days ago in the Kahawa area. It is alleged that a man boarded the matatu, which was charging Ksh80 as the fare. However, the man could only provide Ksh50, which irked the conductor.
Despite pleading with the tout, the man’s pleas fell on deaf ears, with the tout proceeding to open the door and throw the man out of the fast-moving bus. The man is said to have died on the spot, with a postmortem revealing the man succumbed after breaking all his legs, ribs, and hands.
The incident generated much furor, with Kenyans hitting out at the hugely popular company that plies numerous routes in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and its environs.
Over the past few years, Super Metro has gained a core following, with many commuters praising them for their efficiency and professionalism.
However, in the wake of the incident, Super Metro moved to reassure the public of its commitment to upholding its high standards, adding that it would fully cooperate with the relevant authorities in investigations.
“We understand that the public is angry, and rightfully so. No one should lose their life in such a senseless manner. At Supermetro, we hold the sanctity of human life as a core value guiding our actions and decisions,” Metro expressed.
“We will fully cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served. Moving forward, we are reinforcing strict safety protocols & training to prevent such tragedies,” Metro added.
The police have yet to officially issue a statement over the matter.
