A fire at the Limuru Bus Park razed down property and businesses worth millions of shillings, leaving traders counting their losses.
According to authorities, the fire, which was later contained, happened in the early morning of Thursday, March 13, with no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, with many left lamenting on their next port of call in light of the massive inferno.
Preliminary reports indicated that the fire began at one of the hotels at the bus park at approximately 5:00am when they opened for business.
The fire is said to have consumed over ten business establishments, mostly made of aluminium, as it ravaged the bus park, destroying valuable property.
The bus park, which houses hundreds of shopping stalls and some residential settlements, is a critical cog of the public infrastructure at Limuru and a key economic driver in the area.
Traders at the park engage in a myriad of business activities ranging from food stalls, kiosks, and small businesses. The park also serves as a public transportation hub, with a section reserved for a matatu stage.
As of the time of publishing this story, neither the Kiambu County Government nor the police had issued a statement regarding the incident.
The fire came just days after another fire consumed a section of the market in Mamboleo, Kisumu, near the city’s bus stage, leaving property of unknown value destroyed.
The fire, which broke out on the night of Sunday, March 9, started at a food joint in the lakeside city and quickly spread to nearby structures.
The raging flames, which ignited shortly after 9pm, threatened to engulf other investments near the Kisumu County bus park.
However, business occupants, with assistance from local authorities, managed to contain the fire before it spread further.
