The Supreme Court will rule on Friday whether or not to uphold a ban against lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi and his firm from appearing before it.
In a statement by the Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, Benard Kasavuli, the Supreme Court confirmed that it will sit to determine the matter that has put the Apex Court in the limelight.
This comes after a lawyer, Miiri Julius, moved to court under a certificate of urgency, petitioning the court to reverse its decision where it barred Ahmednassir and his legal firm from appearing before the Supreme Court.
''Take Notice that the ruling in this matter will be delivered via email on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 10.00am before the Supreme Court of Kenya,'' a statement from the Supreme Court read in part.
The decision of the Supreme Court is likely to attract a lot of public debate since the lawyer has often found himself at the crossroads of the Supreme Court over his comments and conduct online. Ahmednassir is among a group of lawyers who have been championing the removal of Chief Justice Martha Koome and six other judges of the court.
Additionally, Ahmednassir has been unapologetic in his relentless criticism of the Supreme Court's rulings and conduct, frequently targeting Chief Justice Martha Koome in his attacks.
The tiff between the lawyer and the Supreme Court took a different turn on January 21 this year when the court declined to proceed with a case in which Ahmednasir's firm was representing an appellant.
During the virtual hearing, the judges, led by Chief Justice Koome, were compelled to adjourn the session after Ahmednassir's law firm appeared for a mention of a case before the court. This is despite an earlier decision to bar Ahmednasir and his firm from appearing before the court.
Chief Justice Koome, while delivering the directive, stressed that the court would not proceed with the session if any employees or representatives from the lawyer's firm were present.
"We made a decision last year, in January, where all the judges of this court recused themselves from hearing any matter involving the firm of Ahmednasir, his employees, or any other person holding brief for the firm," Koome stated on behalf of the other judges.
Furthermore, the lawyer is also facing an uphill task in a separate case that is before the judiciary, seeking his removal from the bar of Senior Counsel advocates over his conduct.
In a petition filed by lawyers Paul Kiragu Wathuta and John Murimi Njomo, they argue that Ahmednasir has consistently engaged in actions that are highly discrediting for a person of his legal stature, as they invoked Rule 4(c) and Rule 15 of the Advocates (Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges).
The petition particularly aims at Ahmednasir's consistent tirades on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), which they argued are meant to malign and discredit the judiciary.
