Moi University has urged all its staff to return to work immediately, despite not having paid them their February salaries.
The issue of delayed salaries has been a major challenge for the university, hindering teaching services. On Thursday, February 13, lecturers at the institution issued a notice announcing that they would begin a strike over the delayed salaries.
In a letter signed by Dr Busolo Wegesa, the Chapter Secretary of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) at Moi University, lecturers vowed not to report to work starting February 13, until their salaries were paid.
In an internal memo to staff, the university acknowledged the delay in February's salary payments but urged staff to continue working while the university works to ensure the payments are made.
“We are all aware of the financial challenges facing the University that have led to a delay in payment of the February 2025 salary. Efforts are being made by the University Management and Council to resolve the issues responsible for the delay,” read the statement in part.
The university is calling on the staff to resume their duties to ensure that the planned examinations continue as scheduled.
In the statement, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Kiplagat Kotut, requested all Chairs of Departments to ensure that the planned examinations are administered as scheduled without delay.
Several staff members had complained that, due to the delayed salaries, they were unable to finance their transport to the various examination centres. However, the university revealed that it would be providing buses for staff to use.
"Following the concern raised by some members of staff about their lack of funds to cover transport to the workplace, a university bus will be available on Monday, 17 March, at 7 am at the College of Health Sciences to transport the affected staff to the Main Campus. Preference will be given to staff who are scheduled to invigilate examinations," Kotut revealed.
The acting VC thanked the staff for their continued support, commitment, and patience as the university works to resolve the delayed salary issue.
The University continues to face challenges despite the government making changes to its leadership including placing its immediate Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey on a compulsory 8-month annual leave effective January 30.
Education CS Julius Ogamba also appointed Professor Noah Midemba as the new Chairperson of the Moi University Council, Dr Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Professor Ronald Wasike, Anne Weceke Makori, and Dr Edward Sambili to the Moi University Council, following the revocation of the previous members and streamlining of the management.
