The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has announced the immediate resumption of learning activities at the institution after a month-long strike by the university staff.
TUK Vice Chancellor Benedict Mutua in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, said that the decision followed the suspension of industrial action by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) yesterday.
Mutua revealed that the University Senate convened a special meeting moments after the signing of the Return-to-Work formula, during which they resolved to allow students back to the institution.
“All students are hereby recalled to resume academic programmes at the university, effective Tuesday, March 18, 2025,” read part of the notice.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Diploma and undergraduate examinations which were originally scheduled to take place from February 3 to February 15, would now commence on March 31, 2025.
Mutua clarified that the decision to push the examination date forward was to allow a two-week revision period for all learners to ensure adequate preparation.
“The University Senate reaffirms its commitment to ensuring a smooth, structured, and secure transition as students resume their academic activities,” Mutua assured students.
The VC went on to add, "This resolution was taken by the University Senate during a Special Senate meeting held on March 17, 2025."
Mutua's latest directive comes a day after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba's inter-ministerial meeting at Jogoo House in Nairobi attended by UASU and KUSU officials.
During the meeting, the education stakeholders led by UASU Secretary General Constant Wasonga signed an agreement which marked the end of the four-week strike that paralysed learning activities at the university.
Addressing the press moments after the signing of the agreement, the CS noted that the Ministry had put in place adequate measures to ensure continuous learning in all public universities.
"I trust and believe that the council and the administration will work extra hard to ensure the time that has been lost is recovered for the students," Ogamba commented.
