The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested two robbers who posed as police officers to terrorize and rob attendants at a petrol station along Mandera Road in Wajir.
According to a statement on Thursday, March 20, the two were apprehended after a distress call alerted DCI officers to the ongoing robbery.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers discovered that a gang of five, dressed as police officers, had stormed the station and overpowered the workers in a daring night robbery.
The suspects tied the hands of the night guard and the pump attendant with ropes before making away with Ksh30,000 in cash.
Due to the quick response by the police, the robbers did not make it far, as two were nabbed almost immediately.
In their possession were a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military jungle trouser, and a military jungle jacket, among other incriminating items.
They were subsequently taken into custody for processing as they await a court appearance.
Meanwhile, a manhunt is ongoing for the other three suspects who managed to escape during the high-speed chase.
This case is, unfortunately, not an isolated one, as several other incidents involving criminals posing as police or military officers have been reported before.
In October 2024, a man notorious for terrorizing residents in Narok while posing as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer, was arrested by DCI officers.
According to residents, the man had used his fake status to instill fear in them the entire time he lived in their neighbourhood.
A thorough search of his residence during the arrest unearthed several ID cards belonging to different people and uniforms from both the Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Army.
