Kenya Met Lists Nairobi, Kisumu Among 6 Regions to Receive Heavy Rainfall

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans to brace for heavy downpours in several parts of the country between Friday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 25.

Kenya Met in its weekend rainfall advisory published on Friday, March 21, warned Kenyans living in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern lowlands and North-Eastern Kenya to prepare for heavy rains.

Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi were among the areas projected to experience heavy rains.

According to the meteorological department, rains in the aforementioned counties would begin particularly in the afternoon with the downpour expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms.

The same weather pattern was predicted in the Lake Basin and Rfut Valley counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo-Marakwet.

Other counties that were also projected to receive heavy rains include Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

While heavy rains were expected in most parts of Kenya, the counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River, were predicted to receive moderate downpours.

Light showers were also expected in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as the eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.

In the five-day weather forecast, the Kenya Meteorological Department also cautioned residents living in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi to prepare for very cold nights.

According to the forecast, temperatures in the aforementioned counties were expected to drop to 8°C for the first two days before rising to 9°C for the remainder of the period.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicted high daytime temperatures in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi.

Other counties projected to experience extreme heat during the day included Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.
