Passengers aboard a Kitengela-bound bus were left with injuries after a harrowing accident on the morning of Sunday, March 23.
The early morning incident saw the bus, attached to a Rembo Shuttle Sacco, lose control and veer off the road before landing on a ditch.
Images and videos of the incident depict a harrowing scene, with passengers desperately struggling to escape through the windows after the door was jammed shut due to the impact of the ditch.
The bus also suffered considerable damage, with the windscreen and front section completely shattered. Smoke was also visible from the wreckage.
It is unclear what caused the vehicle to lose control, although there were suggestions that the bus was overlapping at the time of the accident.
The latest incident comes amid scrutiny on public service vehicles in recent weeks, with Super Metro SACCO being among the first casualties of a crackdown on rogue practices on the roads.
On Thursday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revoked the operating license of the Super Metro fleet over a number of infractions committed by several matatus attached to the SACCO.
According to NTSA, it conducted a comprehensive analysis of Super Metro and found that out of its 523 vehicles, 15 had expired inspection certificates, and eight had expired Road Service Licences (RSL).
The suspension of licenses has since prompted SACCO to embark on an urgent inspection exercise, with 294 Super Metro buses undergoing inspection on Saturday.
As a precautionary measure, Super Metro's arch-rival Metro Trans also briefly suspended services on Saturday to train and sensitise their drivers, conductors, and staff.
Notably, the Sunday morning accident was the second one involving a PSV full of passengers overturning along the busy highway. In December, passengers sustained injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned near Maanzoni along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
At the time, witnesses said the PSV lost control after the driver swerved while trying to avoid colliding with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
