The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans living in various parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days, from March 28 to April 1.
In its weekend rainfall advisory published on Friday, March 28, Kenya Met warned residents in the Highland East region, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coast, and Western Kenya to brace for heavy rains.
The Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi were among the areas projected to receive heavy downpours.
According to the weather department, rainfall in these areas will begin in the afternoon and extend into the night, with the downpour expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms.
Heavy downpours were also predicted in counties within the Lake Region and Rift Valley, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
A similar weather pattern was forecast in Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
While most counties were expected to receive heavy rains, counties in the Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, were forecast to experience moderate rainfall over the next five days.
Other counties projected to receive moderate rainfall include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and some parts of Tana River.
The meteorological department, in its weekend weather forecast, also cautioned residents in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi to brace for very cold temperatures during the night.
Night temperatures in these counties were expected to range between 11°C and 10°C before dropping further to 7°C in the last two days of the forecast period.
However, counties in the Lake Victoria and Rift Valley regions, including Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, and Kericho, were projected to experience abnormal daytime heat.
According to Kenya Met, temperatures in these counties would rise to 35°C during the first two days of the forecast period before escalating further to 37°C for the remaining days.
