The National Police Service (NPS) has addressed the Law Society of Kenya's (LSK) claims regarding Inspector General Douglas Kanja's alleged participation in a political rally.
On Thursday, April 3, LSK President Faith Odhiambo called out the police IG after he was spotted in Nyeri at a politically charged event with President William Ruto, who is in Central Kenya on a development tour.
The LSK chief accused the Inspector General of failing to act impartially, claiming that a person holding Kanja's position is "exempt from acting at the whims of any person or advancing any purpose that does not reflect the Constitutional principles of National Security."
However, in a rejoinder, the NPS hit back at the LSK President's accusations, refuting claims that IG Kanja acted in any way that showed he was partisan with his presence in Nyeri.
"NPS categorically refutes these claims and reaffirms the IG's unwavering commitment to constitutional impartiallity in serving all Kenyans, devoid of any political bias," a statement from the NPS read.
"At no time has the IG engaged in activities that could undermine the neutrality of his office."
The NPS further clarified that IG Kanja's presence in Nyeri alongside President Ruto was in line with his official duties, which include overseeing enhanced security for the Head of State as he tours Central Kenya, as per Section 24 of the National Police Service Act 2011 and the NPS Standing Orders Chapter 7 Section 8.
The NPS added, "The Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) is legally tasked with protecting the President, visiting dignitaries, and other designated VIPs under the direction of the Inspector General of Police."
While IG Kanja's Wednesday presence in Nyeri largely went unnoticed, controversy was stirred when the police boss took the opportunity to address the mammoth crowd that had gathered to see the President.
At the rally, the IG assured Kenyans that the police service remains committed to upholding law and order without fear or favor, emphasizing that the police will serve all Kenyans equally, regardless of their political affiliations.
"Our focus is on ensuring the safety and security of every citizen in this country," the IG said during the tour.
This attracted a wave of criticism, including from the LSK President, who accused Kanja's move as a political gimmick. LSK further demanded that the IG refrain from engaging in any form of political mobilization.
