Tension ensued on Monday at the Egerton University main campus in Nakuru County after students staged demonstrations over security issues within the campus.

According to reports, the night demonstrations began after a female student was allegedly attacked by unknown individuals inside the school hostel.

The reports further indicated that the victim sustained critical injuries to her head and limbs, allegedly inflicted by what witnesses claimed could be a machete.

The incident sparked outrage among the university students, who immediately began protesting outside the institution's gate, demanding the school administration’s intervention in the matter.

Videos and images shared online showed students gathered outside the institution before lighting a fire in protest of what they termed as persistent security issues within the institution.

While the university administration is yet to comment on the matter, the area police officers have launched a manhunt for the arrest of the suspects whose identity is yet to be established.

The latest development in Egerton comes barely three days after Maseno University students held demonstrations following an attack on a student.

The students who held demonstrations on April 5 protested the death of Boaz Zachary, a third-year student who was allegedly attacked and severely injured by unknown individuals outside the school.

Reports suggest that Boaz, who also worked as a part-time boda boda operator, was attacked and killed, with his motorbike stolen by the assailants.

While venting their frustrations, the learners protested outside the Maseno Police Station, located 100 meters from the school, accusing the security officers of allegedly failing to arrest the suspects.

During the incident, the students blocked the Kisumu-Busia highway, disrupting transport along the busy road that connects Kenya and Uganda, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

As the protests escalated, police officers were forced to lob tear gas canisters at the protesters in a bid to disperse them. However, the adamant learners vowed to continue demonstrating until their demands were met.
