Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has revealed that more than 2,000 students have been suspended from the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

In a statement on Wednesday, April 9, she revealed that 311 secondary school students and over 1,700 primary school pupils are missing out on government capitation and books in her Githunguri constituency because they are not registered on NEMIS.

NEMIS is a digital platform developed by the Ministry of Education to collect, manage, and analyse data about education across the country.

In capitation management, NEMIS helps the government allocate funding to schools based on the number of students registered.

Wamuchomba explained that she raised the issue with the Cabinet Secretary for Education through official parliamentary questions.

"In Githunguri, over 311 secondary school students and over 1700 pupils are suspended from NEMIS, meaning they cannot receive capitation and books."

"Today in parliament, I have laid a concern to the ministry for education on NEMIS student suspension through a procedural question," the statement reads.

“Could the Cabinet Secretary state the criteria used by the Ministry to suspend students from NEMIS and safeguards to ensure that eligible students are not suspended?” she questioned.

She also asked the Cabinet Secretary to share how much capitation money the Ministry of Education has sent to each school in the Githunguri constituency for the 2024/2025 financial year.

"Could the Cabinet Secretary provide the total amount of the capitation funds disbursed by the Ministry of Education per school in the FY 2024/2025 in Githunguri Constituency and the number of students per school who have benefitted from the funds?" the statement reads.

In addition, she requested an update on how student registration on NEMIS is going in public schools across the country.

“Outline the measures put in place, if any, to ensure smooth NEMIS operations and sufficient disbursement of funds to prevent future disruptions in learning,” she asked.
