Leo Wa Muthende, the MP for Mbeere North, has accused the United Opposition of voter bribery and suppression. He claims that these two factors were the main reasons why he did not win by a landslide.
Despite the narrow margin of just 494 votes, Wa Muthende dismissed suggestions that the result reflected a divided constituency in his post-election remarks.
During an interview, the legislator claimed that the opposition had disrupted voting in areas where he had enjoyed overwhelming support.
He alleged that opposition operatives had bribed voters across several stations and suppressed turnout in his strongholds, particularly in his home ward.
“Even with all their malpractices and my win, my supporters celebrated peacefully. There were no complaints filed with the IEBC or the media,” Wa Muthende added.
The MP urged the Opposition to substantiate their claims by presenting concrete evidence of the alleged irregularities.
Wa Muthende argued that no polling station reported issues with vote counting and reminded the Opposition that the law allows them up to three chances to demand a recount.
Dismissing the Opposition's post-election 'election malpractice' narrative, Wa Muthende alleged that their claims were baseless and lacked video evidence or a formal challenge.
According to the Mbeere North MP, the coalition failed to offer meaningful campaign proposals.
“Where are the videos of the Opposition fronting policies? Did they expect to be elected because of noise-making, gossip, or idle talk?” he posed.
Wa Muthende urged the opposition to accept defeat and allow him to focus on serving his constituents.
He further challenged the United Opposition to prepare adequately for future elections by developing clear policy positions rather than engaging in “small talk and theatrics.”
