At least three people have died, while others are nursing critical injuries following a grisly road accident at the Man Eater area of Tsavo West in Taita Taveta County, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident occurred on Thursday morning at around 5 am, involving a 14-seater matatu and a truck heading in opposite directions.

According to witnesses, the road crash took place after the matatu, which was full of passengers, lost control and rammed into an oncoming truck heading to Mombasa.

Following the accident, a rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene and helped retrieve the victims from the wreckage before rushing them to Voi County Hospital.

Videos and images of the scene shared online showed the matatu extensively damaged, with a broken windscreen, mangled seats, broken windows, and deflated tyres.

On the other hand, the lorry was partially damaged on its front side, with the footage showing rescuers retrieving bodies from the damaged matatu.

Moments later, traffic police officers from Voi arrived and cordoned off the area before towing both vehicles. However, the exact number of fatalities has yet to be established.

In a separate accident this morning, several vehicles, including a matatu and a private vehicle, were involved in an accident in Westlands, Nairobi, along Waiyaki Way.

The accident, which took place around 8 am, occurred after the matatu, which was headed to Kangemi, lost control and collided with the private vehicle before both vehicles veered off the highway and landed in a ditch.

Road users who were on high alert quickly rushed to the scene and assisted the victims who were stuck inside the vehicles before rushing them to various hospitals.

The latest incidents come three days after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) urged drivers to be cautious, particularly during this rainy season, due to potential hazards like flooded roads.

In a notice issued on Monday, April 7, NTSA called on motorists to drive within the required speed limit, rest well before embarking on a journey, ensure their vehicles are well serviced, and report cases of reckless driving.
