A matatu belonging to Super Metro Sacco was on Thursday night involved in a road accident, barely a month after the vehicles returned to the road following a suspension.

According to a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the accident occurred at around 11 pm, when the vehicle was heading to Thika from the CBD.

However, while at Ruiru, the driver failed to spot a lorry in front of him and hit it from behind.

According to occupants in the vehicle who spoke to this publication, the driver had allegedly mentioned that he was feeling sleepy and asked them to engage him in conversation to help keep him alert.

''He didn’t notice the truck ahead of him, which was moving but at a slower speed. As a result, he rammed into it from behind,'' said one of the passengers.

The driver sustained serious leg injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital by good Samaritans.

The two other occupants sitting in front sustained minor head injuries, while other passengers suffered minor injuries from the impact.

Due to the heavy impact of the accident, the front part of the vehicle had to be pulled away to free the driver.

In March, another Super Metro Sacco vehicle was involved in a tragic incident that led to the death of Gilbert Thuo Kimani, a passenger who was allegedly thrown out of a moving vehicle along Thika Road over a Ksh 30 fare dispute.

Witnesses claimed that the conductor pushed him out, leading to his immediate death after being run over by the same vehicle. The incident sparked public outrage, which led to the SACCO's suspension.

Following this incident, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended Super Metro's operating license on March 20, citing non-compliance with safety regulations.

Further, NTSA demanded that over 200 buses from the Sacco be subjected to inspection and conduct a road safety sensitization program.
