The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and the National Police Service (NPS) have announced the return of a road safety awareness campaign in response to the rising number of road carnages recorded in recent weeks.

In a statement issued by KeNHA on Monday, the road safety campaign will run for three days, from Monday to Wednesday, and is aimed at enhancing awareness among road users.

According to KeNHA, the campaign will specifically target Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs) and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), focusing on drivers operating in the western and central regions of the country.

The regions where the three agencies will coordinate the safety exercise include the border towns of Malaba and Busia, Kisumu, Nyeri, and Meru.

The exercise kicked off today in Eldoret and will continue in other parts of the country, where the three agencies aim to reach out to the drivers as part of the government commitments to tackle the road carnages.

''KeNHA Highway Safety team, in collaboration with NTSA and the National Police Service (NPS), has commenced Phase 2 of a nationwide Road Safety Awareness Campaign, running from 14th to 17th April 2025,'' a statement from KeNHA read in part.

''The campaign targets drivers of Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs) and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), aiming to engage high-risk road users, promote responsible behaviour, and enhance collaboration in the dissemination of road safety messages, in response to the recent rise in road carnages.''

On April 6, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir directed the NTSA and police to erect breathalysers on major roads across the country to curb the increasing rate of road carnages.

In a statement, CS announced that any driver caught under the influence of liquor beyond the prescribed limit shall be fined up to Ksh100,000 or face an imprisonment term not exceeding two years, or both.

He also directed the NTSA to regulate the operations of commercial vehicles whose tare weight exceeds 3,480 kg on public roads in the country.

Chirchir further noted that the government will provide a clear framework for the regulation, management, and operation of school vehicles and the transportation of children.

The safety of vehicles transporting school children has been a major concern for the government, with the CS revealing plans to regulate the inspection of school transportation vehicles.
