The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of Mombasa Road and the Nairobi Expressway near Katani Road between Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, July 20.

In a notice dated April 16, the authority urged motorists bound for Mombasa for the Easter festivities during the long weekend to expect this temporary traffic disruption that will extend for three months.

According to KeNHA, this is to allow for the installation of fabricated footbridge beams in the area.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) near Katani Road Junction will experience traffic disruption along the Mombasa-bound lanes from Saturday, 19th April, 2025, at 10.00 pm to Sunday, 20th July, 2025 at 6.00 am," KeNHA noted.

"This is to allow for the installation of the fabricated footbridge beams. KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site."

Several sections of the road adjacent to Syokimau Airport Road, Kiungani Road, and Katani Road bound for Athi River will be closed, and drivers have been urged to follow the proposed routes in the notice.

This is yet another government directive that is set to disrupt plans ahead of the busy Easter weekend.

Speaking in Mombasa on Tuesday, Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno, directed that all beaches be closed by 6 pm during the holiday period to tame the gang problem in the region.

"These are part of the strategies to ensure that there is seamless movement of travellers and visitors along the Kenyan coast. This is a tourist destination centre, and I therefore want to assure our people and the international community that the coastal region is safe and secure," Nuno stated.

''We have an operational order in place, and we will be having teams which will be moving around. They will be strategically placed for enforcement."

In addition, long-distance transport companies were directed to assign two drivers per vehicle to help address fatigue-related issues and reduce road carnage.

Those caught driving while intoxicated will also be apprehended and charged with various traffic offences.
