Two people lost their lives over the weekend in separate incidents reported within Kenya’s national game parks.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), the first incident occurred on a ranch bordering the southern edge of Nairobi National Park, where a lioness fatally attacked a 14-year-old girl.

The girl, according to KWS, was mauled in Savannah near the Nairobi National Park, with the authority revealing that the details of the incident are yet to be confirmed.

The lion is reported to be from the Nairobi National Park and is said to have met the girl after it accessed a residential compound within the Savannah Ranch.

A witness who saw the ordeal on Saturday at around 7pm raised the alarm, prompting a swift response from KWS rangers and emergency teams.

The teams followed bloodstains that led them to the Mbagathi River, where they recovered the girl's body bearing injuries on the lower back. The lion was not spotted at the scene.

The 14-year-old is reported to be a grade 7 pupil at a nearby primary school. The body was moved to Nairobi Funeral Home for postmortem.

Efforts to trace the stray lion are ongoing following the recent spate of park breaks involving lions that have been a common sighting in homes adjacent to the national park.

The second incident involved an elephant attack in Nyeri County, where a 54-year-old man succumbed to his injuries.

The man succumbed to the injuries after the elephant trampled on him in Mere Forest in Kieni East, according to KWS.

On March 28, fear gripped the residents of Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County after CCTV footage of a lioness hunting in a residential area emerged online.

In the clip obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the lioness was recorded slowly approaching the gate of a well-secured compound before climbing on top of the concrete wall that holds the metal gate.
