The 2027 General Election could see an even broader field of presidential contenders, with the latest twist being Embakasi East MP Babu Owino hinting at a possible joint presidential bid with his Kiharu counterpart, Ndindi Nyoro.
Speaking during a breakfast show on Hot 96, the vocal lawmaker revealed that many of his supporters have been urging him to go for the presidency.
According to Babu, having been a leader since his earlier days as a university student leader at the University of Nairobi, he has gathered extensive experience that qualifies him to run for the top seat.
Further, Babu pointed out that his Kiharu counterpart, who was recently ousted as the chairperson of the influential Budget and Appropriations Committee, is a performer and would be a formidable counterpart in the race.
''It depends on how we decide with my brother, Ndindi. He is a performer, and if today we decide that we are going for the presidency, we will win very early in the morning without even paying agents," Babu stated.
On why he was considering a stab at the presidency, the former University of Nairobi student leader revealed that he was drawing inspiration from his mates across the world.
He stated that countries such as Burkina Faso, under his ally Ibrahim Traore, had successfully demonstrated that young leaders can be entrusted with power.
Further, he said that President William Ruto had failed to keep the flames of hope Kenyans had in him when he was elected in 2022.
This, he maintained, will be the downfall of Ruto as he seeks to defend his second term in 2027.
''I am genuinely disappointed because this is the president who ought to have been the best President of Kenya, having been raised from a very humble background,'' Babu stated.
''When he won in 2022, I knew he had won 2027, but as we move towards 2027, he is losing it already because of obvious things like overtaxation and the high cost of living.''
Babu went on to mention potential allies, listing prominent leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, Eugene Wamalwa, Gladys Wanga, Irungu Kang’ata, and George Natembeya as some of the individuals he would consider partnering with.
