Normalcy was disrupted in the Loima Constituency after hundreds of residents stormed the NG-CDF offices in protests against UDA Member of Parliament Protus Akuja.

The residents, armed with tree branches and placards with messages against the MP, demanded that the legislator be removed from the seat for alleged malpractice, nepotism, and lack of transparency while awarding tenders, jobs, and National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) bursaries.

While marching peacefully to the offices as they chanted 'Akuja Must Go', the residents expressed a lack of trust and dissatisfaction in their area. They have also accused the MP of absenteeism.

''We are tired of Akuja, every other constituency has received the CDFs, we see the residents being helped, but that is not the case here, we have not received any CDF, the MP is barely seen here,'' one of the residents decried.

They have accused the MP of fake road tenders, which he only awards to family. They also alleged that the MP awards CDF bursaries to family members or those acquainted with the family.

"That KeRRA road plan he claims to be working on doesn’t exist, or if it does, he’s doing it with his family. Everyone in charge of the CDF is just a family member," another resident alleged.

According to the residents, most students in the area have abandoned going to school because they lack funding from the MP. They have alleged that most schools in the area have shut down.

Responding to the protests, the MP has alleged that they were planned and politically instigated against him.

"I want to make it clear that this is not a spontaneous expression by the residents but rather a politically instigated protest, orchestrated by elements within the county government," the MP alleged.

The MP has alleged that the county leaders against him have propagated the protests to divert attention from ongoing investigations and create a narrative that he was behind the EACC probe.

The MP is among those labelled as the least vocal lawmakers in the National Assembly.

According to Mzalendo, a parliamentary monitoring organisation, Akujah is listed among the 19 MPs who did not contribute to any debates in 2024.

The protests against the MP come at a time when the NG-CDF funds are under scrutiny, with calls to decentralise them to the national government to curb allegations of mismanagement.
