Siaya Governor James Orengo has confirmed that county driver George Were died while others were injured in a tragic road accident while on duty at Delamere Center on Monday evening, May 05.

According to Orengo, Were was transporting senior officials, including the Chief Officer for Education and a representative from the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB). All occupants sustained injuries during the crash.

“It is a deeply sorrowful evening for Siaya County as we mourn the loss of one of our own, Senior Driver George Were, who was involved in a tragic road accident at Delamere Center while on official duty en route to Naivasha,” he said.

In his statement, Orengo extended his heartfelt condolences to George’s family and wished a full recovery to all staff members injured in the accident.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to George’s family and pray that they find strength and comfort during this painful time.”

“We also wish a swift and full recovery to Chief Officer for Education Richard Ogeda, Easter Okello of LREB, and all other staff members who were injured in the accident. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy,” Orengo added.

The accident comes days after several football players narrowly escaped with their lives after the van they were travelling in was involved in a road accident along the busy Kitale-Lodwar highway on May 4, Sunday morning.

According to reports, the players were travelling back home from a league match when the TurkRift Shuttle carrying the players collided with another vehicle at Karoge Centre in Turkana South.

The accident left several players injured, with a number of them losing consciousness from the impact of the crash. Luckily, no fatalities were reported.

Images and videos of the crash scene paint a harrowing picture, with some of the stunned passengers aboard the van spotted sitting on the ground, presumably processing what had just happened. Others were forced to lie on the ground as they awaited medical assistance.

"We regret to inform you with sorrow that some of our players have been involved in a road accident, a collision between two vehicles," the club said in a statement.
