A Kenyan is among three learners who suffered serious injuries in an electrocution incident at a prestigious school in England.
The students were injured and required surgery after being shocked by a cable near one of the school’s boarding houses.
The incident happened at the weekend, according to reports.
On Saturday evening, responders from emergency services, including an air ambulance crew, a hazardous material unit, firefighters, and police officers, hurried to aid the pupils, who were subsequently hospitalised.
The three boys suffered severe burns, requiring surgery, according to official reports.
The school’s spokesperson said: “Three students were involved in an isolated accident on Saturday evening where they sustained serious injuries from contact with overhead electrical cables. They were supported by Millfield staff immediately, and emergency services arrived within minutes.”
"They are in a stable condition in the hospital, with their families by their sides. There is no ongoing danger to others. The entire Millfield Community’s thoughts and best wishes are with them all. We ask for everyone to respect their privacy and avoid speculation. We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how the accident occurred,” the spokesperson added.
The incident is currently under investigation by local police, who confirmed knowledge of the incident adding that other authorities had been roped into the investigations.
"Three people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their next of kin have been informed. Following the incident, a referral was made to the Health and Safety Executive, who will lead in any investigation," noted a police spokesperson.
The school is well known for its sporting excellence and the Kenyan, whose identity is unknown, was reportedly on a sporting scholarship.
The prestigious institution attracts the children of celebrities from around the globe. The institution boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a 30,300 sq ft equestrian centre, squash courts, and even a dedicated fencing 'salle'.
It has earned a reputation for its sporting excellence, having nurtured talents such as former England rugby captain Chris Robshaw and Olympic shooter Peter Wilson. Its alumni also include the King of Thailand and pop sensation Lily Allen.
The school offers an extensive range of sports, including athletics, swimming, rugby, football, hockey, cricket, tennis, equestrian, golf, rowing, fencing, modern pentathlon, sailing, ski racing, and more .
The school employs around 200 sports staff, including five Olympians, who provide expert coaching and support to students. Its commitment to athletic excellence has been evident in its alumni's achievements; the school has produced 79 Olympians who have collectively won 19 medals, including seven golds.
