Former Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) board chair Irungu Nyakera has urged churches to apologise for encouraging Kenyans to vote in the President William Ruto regime.

Taking to social media on Sunday morning, Nyakera, who is among former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's allies, highlighted the mysterious murders of two Kenyan priests in the past two weeks.

In the statement, he urged Kenyans to pray for church leaders so that "they may continue to speak the truth boldly, without fear of being silenced."

"In just two weeks, two priests have been assassinated in unclear and disturbing circumstances. These are the same clergy who stood at the frontlines in 2022, urging Kenyans to elect this administration," he stated.

"I also urge the church to repent and apologise to worshippers for directing them to elect this regime that has, in turn, failed to protect the innocent or deliver on their promises. Finally, as we bow our heads, let us also pray for our future. Pray for WANTAM – We Are Not Taking Another Mistake."

Nyakera's statement comes as police officers continue to probe the murders of two catholic priests who were killed in unclear circumstances.

On May 15, Father John Maina, a catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu, was discovered along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway by a motorcycle rider, near the Diatomite stage, with bruises on the left side of his head.

He told the boda boda rider, who later transported him to St Joseph's Mission Hospital in Gilgil, that he had been abducted from Nyahururu.

Efforts to save him proved futile, and he died from injuries, including bruises on the left side of his head, which were oozing blood.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) later revealed that preliminary investigations had suggested he may have been killed by individuals targeting money donated to his parish, although speculations continue, as the priest had just hosted the former DP.

On May 22, Father Alloyce Cheruiyot Bett was shot by assailants in the Tot area of Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet, with reports indicating he was heading back to his base after a sermon.

According to witnesses, the assailants sprayed the priest with bullets moments after he concluded a Jumuiya (small Christian community) mass in Kakbiken village.

Emerging reports indicate that the priest had received several visits from the DCI leading up to his death.
