The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to begin the vetting of all persons with disabilities to determine those who will be given tax exemptions starting June 9.

KRA is working with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to ensure those who qualify get the relief from the burden of taxes.

Tax exemption vetting is a process where applicants, especially people living with disabilities, undergo an assessment to determine if they qualify for tax relief.

"NCPWD in collaboration with the KRA and the MoH, will be carrying out tax exemption vetting exercises in the following counties on the dates and venues as tabulated below, commencing 9th June 2025," the statement read in part.

The exercise will kick off in Kisii County on June 9, followed by sessions in Kisumu, Kakamega, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Mombasa, Garissa, Isiolo, Murang’a, Machakos, and Nairobi on subsequent dates.

The venues of the vetting are Kisii Referral, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kakamega Referral, Huruma Sub-county (Eldoret), Nakuru County Referral, and Tudor Sub-county Hospitals. Others are Garissa County Referral, Isiolo County Referral,  Murang'a Level 5 County, and Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

The final vetting will take place at the NCPWD Headquarters from June 30 to July 4. The exercise is only open to applicants who submitted their tax-exemption applications via the e-citizen platform.

Applicants have been directed to present original Disability Medical Assessment Reports, valid Tax Compliance Certificates, and any other documents uploaded during their online application.

The authorities have clarified that individuals who did not receive an invitation SMS were still eligible for vetting as long as their application status on eCitizen reads ‘Verification’ or ‘In Process’.

Parents and caregivers of PWDs are however, not eligible for tax exemption due to the ongoing development of specific regulations for their applications. Once finalized, an official communication will be made regarding the process for caregivers to seek tax relief.

"We wish to inform all parents and caregivers of persons with disabilities that you are currently not eligible to apply or be vetted for the Income Tax exemption in the upcoming vetting exercise. Once these are finalized and officially released, we will communicate the application and vetting process," the notice continued.

Successful applicants will be granted official tax exemption status, allowing them to benefit from tax relief on income, purchases, and essential services.
