Several police officers are feared dead after their patrol car collided with a trailer at Matisi, along the Bungoma-Webuye Highway.
According to reports, the two vehicles collided, and the police car was completely damaged.
In videos and images seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a body thought to be that of a police officer can be seen covered with a white cloth on the ground, next to the wreck of the police car.
The police Land Cruiser is from the Bungoma Railway Police Station. However, it is unclear if all the officers on board were from the same station.
The details on how the accident happened remain scant, but witnesses say the officers died on the spot.
Some reports indicate that three police officers have been pulled from the wreck, but police have yet to confirm.
First responders, well-wishers and police have responded to the accident, and the rescue efforts are underway.
Police have also collected the remains of the slain officers, with responders working to clear the road.
In one of the incidents, Corporal James Mutunga of the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit was fatally struck by a speeding car while assisting in clearing a stalled Tuktuk near Thika. The vehicle also injured three pedestrians before coming to a halt.
The other occurred in Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, when teenagers driving a vehicle owned by a police officer collided with a bus, resulting in their deaths.
Between January and March 2025, Kenya experienced a concerning number of road accidents, resulting in 1,139 fatalities, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
This marked a slight decrease from the 1,166 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.
Last year, a police vehicle reportedly veered off its lane and collided with an oncoming 14-seater matatu along the Kericho-Sotik Highway.
While no fatalities occurred, the police officer sustained minor injuries, and witnesses alleged the officer might have been driving under the influence.
The NTSA reported that pedestrians were the most affected group, accounting for 420 of the fatalities, followed by motorcyclists (301), passengers (189), pillion passengers (130), drivers (83), and pedal cyclists (16).
In response to the high number of accidents, the NTSA and police launched a road safety awareness drive, focusing on enforcing traffic laws, educating road users, and cracking down on unroadworthy vehicles and reckless driving behaviours.
