The High Court in Nanyuki has sentenced a woman to 40 years in jail for murdering her ex-lover, bringing an end to a winding, seven-year case.

Through a statement released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Friday, June 6, the court found the woman guilty of an offence she committed on December 4, 2018.

As per the chief prosecutor, the court heard that on the night of the incident, the accused, accompanied by two accomplices, unlawfully entered the deceased’s residence, where they murdered him.

The deceased, who was her former lover and a businessman in Nanyuki, was also robbed of personal effects, household items, and his motor vehicle.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution, led by Ms Esther Kimani, outlined several aggravating factors.

It was revealed that the accused was already serving three sentences for separate robbery offences and had two other active robbery cases pending before the court.

The prosecution further submitted that the additional robberies were committed while the accused was out on bond in the present murder case, leading to the revocation of her bond.

Reports indicated that the woman and her accomplices were arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives at a petrol station in Murang’a, a day after the man was found dead.

They were found with the victim’s stolen car and electronics taken from him. It is believed that the woman worked in an entertainment joint owned by the businessman, where she was a waitress.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood by his employees on December 4, 2018, who had gone to check on him after he failed to answer their calls and had not reported to his business.

The man was found with multiple stab wounds on his body. The woman, who had initially denied the charges, was known to be the man’s girlfriend as they were often seen together and a frequent visitor to his house.

Even so, the exact motive behind the murder was not clear, but unconfirmed reports indicated that it must have been a dispute that might have led to the victim’s death.
