“The police vehicle, reportedly speeding while responding to another accident nearby, collided with the pickup, leading to a tragic outcome. Sadly, three lives were lost on the spot, including that of a police officer and one civilian,” the statement read.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by emergency responders and the importance of road safety for all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those injured.”

On June 3, several police officers died after their patrol vehicle collided with a trailer at Matisi along the Bungoma-Webuye Highway. Reports indicated that the two vehicles crashed head-on, leaving the police car completely wrecked.

Last year, a police vehicle veered off its lane and crashed into an oncoming 14-seater matatu along the Kericho-Sotik Highway. Although no fatalities were reported, the officer sustained minor injuries. Witnesses at the scene claimed the officer may have been driving under the influence.

Additionally, in April last year, a police officer was tragically reported dead after his car crashed near the Lusaka roundabout on Uhuru Highway.

Industrial Area OCPD Judith Nyongesa stated that the officer, who was attached to the Gigiri police station, was travelling from the City Centre towards Mlolongo.

Between January and March 2025, Kenya experienced a concerning number of road accidents, resulting in 1,139 fatalities, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

This marked a slight decrease from the 1,166 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.

The NTSA reported that pedestrians were the most affected group, accounting for 420 of the fatalities, followed by motorcyclists (301), passengers (189), pillion passengers (130), drivers (83), and pedal cyclists (16).
