In response to claims that he planned the arson against Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse's hotel, the Director of Criminal Investigations has called former Machakos County Executive Committee member Urbanus Wambua.

Mwengi Mutuse, the mover of the former DP Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment motion counted loses after a recent protest led to the torching of his hotel.

The hotel, located in Wote town, was among several properties vandalised and set ablaze during the nationwide demonstrations on June 25.

The establishment was the target of a mob, according to earlier police reports, but the new allegations raise the possibility that the attack had political motivations.

According to his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, Wambua will be grilled at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road.

"Today, I and Sen. Dan Maanzo shall be appearing before the DCI Kiambu Road, representing former Urbanus Wambua, who is being accused of burning down Mr. Mwengi Mutuse’s hotel at Wote," Njiru wrote on his X page.

The interrogation comes after the DCI's investigations, which are looking for evidence that the arson might have involved more than just sporadic protest violence.

Business owners nationwide tallied their losses during the June 25 commemorative protest, as some of their establishments were looted and others set on fire.

Armed hooligans infiltrated the peaceful protests across Nairobi, Eldoret, and other towns. They were seen attacking protesters, looting businesses, and causing destruction.

Several government offices and several police stations were also not saved, as they too were looted and torched.

Mutuse is not new to the Kenyan public, as the first-time MP made headlines as the mover of the impeachment motion against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The motion, citing abuse of office and unexplained wealth, among other charges, led to Gachagua's impeachment, a move that has since sharply divided the political class.
