A fire has broken out at the Embakasi Girls High School in Nairobi.
Reporting the news on Sunday, July 6, the Kenya Red Cross revealed that efforts were ongoing to contain the fire, stating, "Fire at Embakasi Girls’ School, Nairobi County. Efforts to contain it are underway."
"Response teams from the Nairobi Fire Brigade, Kenya Red Cross Action Team, and the Community-Based Response Team are on the scene."
Although the extent of the fire is yet to be reported, images shared online showed a billowing cloud of smoke emanating from the school compound.
Other images shared on social media also showed the students looking on as the building, a dormitory at the institution went up in flames.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and fortunately, no casualties have been reported as at the time of publishing this article.
This is the latest school in Kenya to suffer such a catastrophic loss to fire, a phenomenon that has plagued Kenyan high schools for years.
It comes just over a month after a dormitory at the Nyambaria Boys' High School, in Nyamira County, caught on fire on the early morning of Tuesday, May 27.
The fire is said to have started at around 4 am, when the students were attending the morning preps.
In images seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the fire could be seen from as far away as the estates neighbouring the school, painting a grim picture of the damage that had been incurred.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported either although over 300 students reportedly lost property to the blaze.
Preliminary investigations were launched to determine the cause of the blaze at the dormitory, which is incidentally located quite close to the school's kitchen area.
