About 60 suspected Al Shabaab militants reportedly raided Basuba village, which is located within the Boni Forest in Lamu County.
Reports indicate that the heavily armed militants invaded the village and opened fire indiscriminately, going after the residents in their homes.
According to witnesses, the terrorists launched the attack on Friday, July 25, at around 9 pm, sparking fear among the residents who were unable to reach out for help.
Further details suggest that a number of the militants went ahead to surround the General Service Unit (GSU) police camp that is located a few meters from the village.
Moments later, there was a fierce exchange of fire between the officers and the militants within the camp. The exchange lasted for about an hour, during which time the officers managed to repel the terrorists.
During the fight, the militants reportedly fired four rocket-propelled grenades towards the GSU camp and the nearby village. However, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths so far.
Following the attack, security agencies have since intensified operations within the region, with more deployments expected in the area.
The latest incident adds to the number of attacks made by the terrorists in the past three months. Barely a fortnight ago, three Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) officers were killed inside the Boni Forest.
In the July 15 ambush, six other military officers sustained injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in ran over an improvised explosive device.
The officers were part of a multi-agency group deployed inside the forest to undertake Operation Amani Boni. The operation, launched in September last year, is aimed at flushing out the militants inside the forest.
Another similar occurrence took place in April this year within the same locality, where suspected Al Shabaab terrorists attacked a GSU camp at night.
In the night attack that took place at around 10.45 pm, the suspected terrorists divided themselves into three groups; the first group attacked the GSU camp while the other groups raided the nearby village in Lamu.
