Properties of unknown value on Wednesday night went up in flames after a mysterious fire broke out at the Kawangware Estate in Nairobi.

According to witnesses, the fire broke out in one of the buildings a few minutes before 9pm and quickly spread to other residential buildings, which also housed people's businesses.

However, initial attempts by the locals to put out the fire proved futile as the flames escalated, forcing them to seek help from the Nairobi County government.

Moments later, firefighters from the Nairobi County Government Disaster Management team arrived at the scene and put out the fire, which had already consumed several properties.

Videos and images widely shared on the internet showed several buildings engulfed in huge clouds of smoke, with some of the residents attempting to retrieve their properties.

Other footage depicted a group of residents watching the fire burn down their property even as the responders intensified their efforts.

Following the tragic occurrence, the county government officials aided the residents in accessing alternative shelters. Luckily, no casualties were reported from the night's incident.

Nonetheless, the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established, but the area police officers have since launched an investigation into the occurrence.

The latest incident comes barely a month after another fire was reported in the estate, which killed one person and left several others nursing critical injuries.

The inferno, which broke out on June 15, began on the fourth floor of one of the residential buildings a few minutes before midnight and spread all over the place.

Commenting on the incident moments after putting out the fire, Nairobi Police Commander George Sedah revealed that those injured had been taken to the hospital.

"We can confirm one fatality for now. Some were also injured and taken to the hospital,” Sedah told journalists, adding that investigations were underway.
