Three Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were injured and rushed to hospital when chaos erupted during the impeachment proceedings of Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.

The chaos broke out on August 15 in the Kericho County Assembly immediately after the Speaker announced the results of the impeachment vote, confirming that Governor Mutai had been impeached for a second time.

A video obtained by Kenyans.co.ke captured the shocking turn of events, showing a tense political session descending into a physical brawl.

The footage reveals rival MCAs exchanging blows, while the chamber is filled with sounds of screaming as frustration and anger boil over. At one point, items can be seen being thrown.

During the chaos, some MCAs were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The motion to remove the governor, proposed by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony, received overwhelming support, with 33 MCAs voting in favour of impeachment.

While the specific reasons for the impeachment and the full details of the chaos are still emerging, the injured MCAs were quickly taken to hospital for treatment.

A total of 33 out of 47 MCAs voted in favour of removing Governor Mutai from office, while 14 voted against. The electronic vote exceeded the two-thirds majority required to pass the motion.

This differs from his last impeachment, when he was saved by the Senate despite 31 MCAs voting against him at the county assembly.

Following the vote, the Assembly Speaker announced that the case would now be referred to the Senate. The governor will be able to defend himself there.

If the Senate agrees with the impeachment, he will be permanently removed from his position. Otherwise, he will remain in office.

The day started with a lot of tension. There was an attempt to burn down the county assembly building, and there were fights in the streets. Because of this, a large police presence was deployed to maintain order before the meeting began.
