The government, through the National Land Commission (NLC), has announced plans to take back 5000 parcels of land in Mandera County for various purposes.

The said parcels of land are located in Baraqwo, Koromey, Mandera Central Business District (CBD), Neboi and Heleshid, all situated within Mandera County.

In a notice dated Thursday, September 4, the Commission said that the parcels of land in the locations above would be reclaimed within 30 days after the date of publication of the notice.

NLC further stated that the allocation of the pieces of land would be done per the terms, covenants, conditions and reservations outlined in the conveyance document.

"Notice is hereby given that at the expiry of 30 days from the date of publication of this Notice, NLC, on behalf of Mandera County, intends to allocate tenure of the following parcels of land in Blocks 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and  10 for various land uses," read part of the notice.

According to the Commission, in the absence of any valid objections, the allocation of the said lands would take place at the Commission's office in Nairobi as from 2.30 pm on the next working day following the expiry of this notice.

While urging members of the public to express their objections, the Commission called on Kenyans seeking to access the terms of reallocation of the pieces of land to visit NLC's offices in Nairobi.

"The parcels are planned and surveyed, and ownership details may be inspected at the offices of the CECM in charge of Lands, Mandera County, Director of Surveys, Nairobi and NLC offices during working hours," NLC directed.

However, the Commission did not explicitly reveal the primary reason behind the planned recovery of the lands amid fears of massive loss of property during the process.

The latest announcement comes barely a month after the same Commission issued a similar notice to Makueni County residents after it revealed plans to acquire more land for the expansion of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Wote Township.

In the notice published on August 24, NLC revealed that it was seeking to reclaim 14 acres of land within Makueni, which would later be handed to the college's administration for the construction of more buildings.

According to the Land Commission, the college management would be responsible for safeguarding the land, making sure the demarcated boundaries of the land parcels are well-maintained.
