Govt Begins Talks for Land Compensation for Muhuru Pier in Migori County

The National Land Commission (NLC) has revealed plans to acquire land in Muhuru Bay, Migori County, to facilitate the construction of Muhuru Pier, which was inaugurated by President William Ruto in May. 

The 26 parcels of land totalling 6.8 hectares of land are located in the Kadem/Muhuru Bay Area. All affected individuals, whose names have been published in the gazette notice, have been directed to visit the Migori County Lands Office for compensation hearing claims.

In a gazette notice dated August 26, the commission claimed that the acquisition will be done on behalf of the Migori County Government, which is set to execute the project.

"In pursuance of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII, the National Land Commission, on behalf of the County Government of Migori,  gives notice of a hearing of claims to compensation for interested parties in the land required for the Construction of Muhuru pier in Muhuru Bay, Migori County," the notice read.

A pier is a raised platform that extends from the shore into a water body and is often used for docking boats and ships, and also, fishermen can use it for fishing.

All affected persons have been directed to submit a written compensation claim,  a copy of their National ID, KRA pin, land ownership documents, and bank account details at the commission's offices to facilitate the compensation process.

"Every person interested in the affected land is required to deliver to the National Land Commission on or before the day of the inquiry a written claim to compensation, a copy of their identity card (ID), and Personal Identification No. (PIN), land ownership documents and bank account details," the commission stated.

"The Commission offices are in Ardhi House, 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi, and at the National Land Commission Office in Migori County," it added.

The announcement comes two weeks after the commission announced that it is in the process of acquiring land in Kiambu County to pave the way for the construction of the Ndekere–Kwa Macharia–Cuniniki Road.

In a gazette notice dated August 8, the commission said that the acquisition of the land will be done in line with Part VIII of the Land Act.

The targeted parcels of land are located in Ndurugu Ndurugu/Gacharage, measure a combined 0.217 hectares, and are registered under both private owners and public entities, according to the commission.

The affected landowners were directed to ensure that they visit its offices in Nairobi to inspect the affected land and get more details about the road project.

"In pursuance of the Land Act, Part VIII, the National Land Commission, on behalf of the County Government of Kiambu, gives notice that the County Government intends to acquire the parcels of land listed below for the Construction of the Ndekere-Kwa Macharia-Cuniniki Road Project-Kiambu County," NLC  stated.
