The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans living in various parts of the country to brace for moderate to heavy downpour for the next five days, from Friday this week, to Tuesday next week.
Kenya Met in its weekly weather advisory, published on Friday, September 5, said rains were expected in the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Northwest and the Rift Valley.
Counties in these regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.
According to the weather department, rains in these areas were projected to begin in the morning hours, with the downpour expected to intensify in the afternoon.
Kenya Met disclosed that the downpour would be intense in the afternoon and was likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms. Residents living in the said areas were urged to be on the lookout for potential flooding.
In its advisory, the meteorological department also announced moderate rains in the Highland East region, which encompasses the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.
Rains in the Highland East region were expected to commence in the afternoon after cloudy and sunny intervals during the morning hours.
Kenya Met revealed that while the rains in these regions would be in moderate amounts, the downpour was expected to be intense on Saturday, September 6.
While some part of the country was projected to receive rain, the North-Eastern region and the South-Eastern lowlands were predicted to remain dry throughout the forecast period.
Temperature Advisory
Besides rainfall prediction, the meteorological department also cautioned Kenyans living in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi to brace for very cold nights.
According to the weather department, temperatures in the aforementioned counties were likely to drop up to 5°C for the five days.
Cold weather was also predicted in Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega and Vihiga.
In the announcement, Kenya Met further warned that Strong southerly winds with speeds exceeding 12.86 metres per second were expected over the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
