Nzau, officially known as Sofiya Wanjiku, was born on February 20, 1993, in Miruri, Murang’a County. Before her music career took off, she worked as a street vendor and housemaid in Thika from 2015 to 2020.
It was after the COVID-19 pandemic reached Kenya that she decided, in December 2020, to begin work as a full-time songwriter. Her husband, who a music producer, supported her transition.
As for her music style, Nzau writes in Kikuyu, with her music often a blend of electronic dance music, house, and progressive house. Despite being of a ‘foreign’ genre, Nzau’s songs are rooted in Kenyan culture, particularly incorporating local language and storytelling.

Her breakout song, Mwaki, catapulted her into global stardom and has so far amassed over 300 million streams on Spotify, earning her platinum certifications in multiple countries.
The song, released on November 10, 2023, went viral on TikTok, driven by Nzau’s vocals and the song’s distinctive sound, attracting the attention of international producers.
