At least 13 people were injured on Friday morning when they were involved in a road traffic accident near Ngoingwa on the Thika–Mang'u highway.
Two matatus travelling in opposite directions collided head-on, leaving seven people with critical injuries and six others with bruises and minor injuries.
Reports indicate that the crash occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, when one of the drivers swerved to avoid hitting a donkey carrying water jerricans on the road.
According to witnesses, one of the vehicles was heading to Thika, while another was en-route to Nairobi city when the two vehicles collided trapping several passengers inside the wreckage.
During the incident, one of the vehicles caught fire, but the flames were quickly extinguished by locals who had rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped under the wreckage.
No fatalities were reported in the incident that left both drivers with critical injuries.
Footage shared online showed both vehicles severely damaged, mainly on the front sections with broken windscreen, mangled seats, broken windows and deflated tyres.
The accident resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along the route, forcing police officers to intervene and clear the road as they towed off the vehicles.
The crash adds to the rising cases of road accidents across the country. Just a day before, one person died after a car crashed before bursting into flames along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.
A day earlier two people also died and 7 others sustained injuries in a road accident along the Isebania-Migori highway.
The accident, which occurred on Wednesday, September 17, took place at the Mabera area of Kuria North, Migori County, after a speeding probox lost control and rammed into an oncoming trailer, killing two people on the spot.
On Tuesday, September 16, 6 people lost their lives while 4 others sustained injuries after a lorry lost control and knocked down pedestrians who were waiting to board a matatu.
The accident took place in the Kipsitet area along the Kerich-Kisumu highway. According to Sion Sub-County Police Commander Lawrence Kisini, the lorry was ferrying scrap metal when it crashed into the passengers.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that Kenya recorded 3397 deaths due to road accidents in the first eight months of this year.
