The National Land Commission (NLC) has issued a land acquisition notice affecting one land owner in Nairobi and 66 owners in Taita Taveta, linked to ongoing road projects in the two counties.
In a gazette notice dated September 26, 2025, NLC Chairman Gershom Otachi said that it is in the process of acquiring a 0.1818-hectare piece of land in Nairobi, which is owned by a company for the Eastern Missing Link Road Project.
The acquisition of the land will be made on behalf of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), which will oversee the construction of the road, according to Otachi.
Otachi noted that anyone affected by the process will be required to submit a written claim for compensation to NLC offices, accompanied by other documents such as ID, land ownership documents, and bank account details.
"In pursuance of section 112 and 162 (2) of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII and further to Gazette Notice Nos.1519 of 2015, 7587 of 2015 and 9341 of 2015, the National Land Commission, on behalf of KURA, gives notice that National government intends to add the following parcel of land for the project and further, an inquiry to hearing claims to compensation for the interested parties," the commission stated.
On the other hand, in Taita Taveta County, the commission has said that it has deleted 66 land parcels with a combined area of approximately 24.45 hectares that were targeted for acquisition for the Illasit–Njukini–Taveta (Lot 32) Road Project.
"In pursuance of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII, and further to Gazette Notice No. 12300 of 2021, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority gives notice that the National Government deletes the following parcels of land that were required for Construction of Illasit – Njukini – Taveta (Lot 32) Road Project in Taita Taveta County," NLC stated.
"Plans for the affected land may be inspected during office hours at the office of the National Land Commission, Ardhi House, 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi, and at the Commission’s County Co-ordinator’s Office in Taita Taveta County," it added.
Lastly, the commission has further reserved 0.2541 hectares in Isiolo County to the State Law Office, for the construction of the Attorney General's chambers and ancillary services.
The commission has noted that the office should ensure that it submits a development and management plan within the next 180 days; failure to do so could lead to the revocation of the reservation of the order.
Once in control, the office shall ensure that at least 10 per cent of the land is covered by trees and vegetation as part of the Constitutional requirements, in addition to ensuring that they comply with the waste management regulations, according to the commission.
"The Management Body shall ensure proper documentation, stock-take, monitoring, and reporting of the landscape-level critical biodiversity resources, including measures taken towards their protection and conservation," Otachi stated.
