Several items, including luxury vehicles, motorcycles and unclaimed goods, are set to be auctioned across the country following a series of gazette notices.

The auctions target items that have remained uncollected for weeks or months in garages, storage yards and in some cases, police stations.

As per a gazette notice released on October 3, all auctions would be carried out under the Disposal of Uncollected Goods Act (Cap. 38), which permits the sale of goods which have not been claimed within a reasonable period.

Among the auctioneers was a CMC Motors, which listed several luxury vehicles which have reportedly overstayed at the company's yard.

The owners of the vehicles were put on notice of the impending auction of vehicles, including a Land Rover Discovery, a Ford Ranger and an Audi Saloon, if they failed to collect them within 30 days.

Also listed in the auction are commercial vehicles, including lorries, matatus, and container units, which are set to be auctioned by Fancy Friends Auctioneers.  Some of these units have been left for extended periods with no follow-up from the owners.

Separately, Janice Investment Auctioneer issued notices concerning several vehicles stored at different garages across the country.

Hariki Auctioneers put on notice the owner of an Isuzu NQR truck, which is reportedly unclaimed at a storage yard along Kangundo Road in Nairobi.

To claim the items, the owners will be required to cover various costs, including all accumulated storage charges, any applicable interest, incidental expenses, and the cost of publishing this notice in the gazette.

Motorcycles made up a significant portion of the items to be auctioned, with many of them stored at police stations, where they were impounded or abandoned. According to Ikimwanya Auctioneers, some of them were numberless, others stripped down to skeletons, while a few are still in usable condition but remain unclaimed.

"Failure to collect the items will lead to their disposal either by public auction, tender or private treaty and proceeds therefrom will be defrayed against all accrued charges without any further reference to the owner," one of the notices read.

Uncollected vehicles in garages and police stations have become a familiar sight in recent months, with owners resorting to leaving their property for varying reasons. On most occasions, vehicles are left uncollected in garages after impoundment by police following an accident.

On some occasions, owners are unable to afford the repairs, towing fees, or insurance premiums, prompting the vehicle to stay for extended periods in garages or police stations.

In extreme cases, owners decide to abandon the vehicles altogether, especially if the cost of retrieving the vehicle or motorcycle exceeds the cost of acquiring a new one.
