Kabuchai Member of Parliament Majimbo Kalasinga has claimed that his life is in danger, accusing Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula of being behind the threat.
Kalasinga, while addressing the press on Monday, said he received threats from Wetang'ula in fallout over the ongoing by-election campaigns in Chwele Ward, Kabuchai Constituency.
The lawmaker claims that Wetang'ula stated that 'he would not move on to the next elections' while addressing delegates at his house. Wetang'ula is said to have made the threatening statements in his local language.
''My brother Wetang'ula, you know what is going on clearly. There has not been a single time I have called the press to address a matter as such. Give me time to deliver or the electorates will,'' Kalasinga stated.
''We can interpret whatever you said. You said that I will not cross over to the next elections. Where did he mean I should be? He should come out and tell Kenyans what he meant. Did he mean I should be in heaven or Uganda?''
The legislator has called upon the government to beef up his security, maintaining that differences between him and the Speaker might likely spill over.
The MP added that the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, should move with speed and assemble all the material evidence, including videos that are in the public domain, to enable investigations into the claims.
At the time of publishing, Speaker Wetang’ula had not personally responded to the claims, and MP Kalasinga had not confirmed whether he had reported the matter to the police.
In a rejoinder, Wetang’ula’s party, Ford Kenya, through Simiyu Mutaki, who identified himself as the Speaker’s Personal Assistant, dismissed the allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.
Mutaki stated that the party was committed to conducting peaceful by-elections and accused the MP of exaggerating the situation.
He further alleged that Kalasinga had contributed to his own insecurity by occasionally leaving one of his bodyguards behind while travelling abroad.
''The remarks made by the MP are quite surprising. As Ford Kenya, we have maintained that we will hold peaceful elections, and we therefore dismiss these allegations in their entirety,'' Mutaki said.
